Grifola frondosa is the scientific name of maitake mushroom. It is a polypore mushroom. It occurs most prolifically in the northeastern regions of the United States but has been found as far west as Idaho. In the United States, the mushroom is known by its Japanese name maitake. In the Northeastern United States, throughout Italian American communities, it is known as Signorina Mushroom.
